Bonnie Prince Charlie was the nickname given to Charles Edward Stuart. Born December 1720, he died January 1788, Charlie was known in life as The Young Pretender. Born the grandson of King James II both his father and himself strongly felt they were the last legitimate heirs of the crown and sought to regain it for themselves and their catholic faith. Bonnie Prince Charlie was the second Jacobite pretender seeking to restore. The thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland to Stuart rule.
Charlie's greatest action of note being that he lead the Jacobite uprising in 1745 which eventually ended in defeat at Culloden and in effect the end of the Jacobites. He plotted and planned with the French against England but after numerous English naval victories, plans to revolt never materialized. Bonnie Prince Charlie is depicted by Royal Doulton as a pasty looking-fellow. His skin the color of white porcelain, his white powdered wig and cravat around his neck emphasize his delicate features.There is a slight blush to his cheeks and his blue eyes burn with passion for restoring the crown to his family. Dressed in a white and blue tartan coat with a gold collar and blue tam with large white flower embellishment and gold edging, Charlie looks a distinguished gentleman.
The handle of the jug is composed of a bundle of purple thistle, Scotland's national flower that grows in the wild all over Scotland.
