In 1900 he was commander in chief of the Boer War. Upon his return to England in 1902 he was named Viscount Kitchener. When World War I broke out he reluctantly accepted the position of Secretary of State for War and began the operation of recruiting vast numbers of volunteers nicknamed Kitchener Armies. By the end of 1915 he was convinced to win the war there would need to be conscription. His face became synonymous with the war effort and the strong British will to win.
Though he died before the end of WWI; his contribution will always be remembered. This commemorative jug depicts Lord Kitchener very regally. He is wearing a khaki uniform with black collar and gold buttons. His sharp hazel eyes stare from beneath his military hat which is white with a khaki bill and a black rim with a large gold medal in the center. The handle is composed of the Union Jack, the recruitment poster he was famous for, and poppies which are used as the symbol for the hope because they were the only thing to grow in the barren blood soaked fields after the end of World War I. Royal Doulton of England are world-renowned for their creative collectible lines of character jugs, toby jugs and derivative items.
Often times mistakenly called toby jugs, real toby jugs feature a fully seated or standing character. Royal Doulton coined the name Character jug as their impression focused solely on the character's face, shoulders and included a decorative handle which portrayed something relevant to the character. Each piece is hand-made and hand-painted by a well-trained Royal Doulton artist which accounts for each item being a truly unique creation.
Their attention to detail, precision, and quality standards are why Royal Doulton collectibles are some of the most highly sought after in the world. The tradition of the Toby as a drinking vessel dates back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and featured the full figure of a man in a seating or standing position. Most of the first jugs created by Royal Doulton were in the traditional toby jug style. It was the 1930's when Doulton designer Charles Noke conceived of focusing more on the face of a character that Royal Doulton coined the name "Character jug" as a way to differentiate their jugs from the traditional style of toby jug.At the urging of designer Max Henk in the 1950's, the handles began to play an important part of the aesthetics of the jug. It was then plain handles started to be replaced with decorative handles which portrayed something relevant to the character depicted. Royal Doulton character jugs come in a variety of sizes with the most common being miniature, small and large. There have been some tiny and mid-sized produced as well, though they are not as common.
It was again famed designer Charles Noke that used his character jugs idea as inspiration to create additional functional items like: tobacco jars, match stands, ash bowls, teapots, sugar bowls, lighters, napkin rings, wall vases and music boxes. Though produced in smaller numbers then their character jug counterparts, derivatives of character jugs are also extremely popular collectible items. Whether its a character jug, toby jug or a derivative item; every piece is hand-made and hand-painted by a well-trained Royal Doulton artist which accounts for each one being a truly unique creation.
