Charles George Gordon (1833 1885) was known as Chinese Gordon after he commanded the Chinese forces against Taiping rebels in 1863. As Governor-General of the Sudan, he was instrumental in closing down the slave trade. In 1884 he was ordered to rescue the Egyptian garrison at Khartoum; instead he was besieged in Khartoum and killed.
